sorry ... but the bible doesn't say that

Sometimes I preach about things I think our church needs to hear for our salvation; sometimes I preach about things that might help bring the Kingdom of God to Earth; I often preach about issues of social justice. But sometimes ... I can do all of these and still make it fun! (This is important, because even I get tired of hearing myself talk.) I think this new series is fun. I’ve never preached this a series of sermons like this, and I’m really enjoying studying for them.

Over the next four weeks or so we’ll talk about things that sound like they come from the Bible, but don’t. As we do, we will look for the true message of these so called truisms. Studying the bible is important for us as we learn along our walk toward sanctification. In fact, we study to find God’s calling for each of us.

Here are the old sayings that we will examine in the coming weeks:

  • God helps those who help them selves (actually says SEEK God first!)
  • Obedience to God will bring you riches (actually says RELY on God!)
  • Do not judge (actually it does say this but it means to LOVE one another)
  • God won’t give you more than you can handle (actually says God WINS)

I have taken these topics from an organization in Houston called Ministry Pass and made them my own. This series should be fun and informative in ways that can lead us to lead grace filled lives. I hope you will be here and add to our conversations.

In matters of faith, we at First United Methodist Church, Sealy put primary reliance on the Bible. In scripture, we understand that we are all God’s children; therefore, we will be a church that cares for the needs of our church and local community through prayer, deeds, inspiration, and love in the spirit of Christ.
